THINGS TO DO IN LALITPUR
1. Visit Patan Durbar Square
Patan Durbar Square is one of the three Durbar Squares in Nepal. Patan is especially famous for its Newari architecture, wood carvings and brick work. The area features several important temples and residences one of which was home to a former king of Patan. A wide variety of temples and monasteries throughout the palace complex makes this site quite compelling. The Malla Kings constructed this entire region.
2. Enter Patan Museum
The Patan Museum is actually located in Durbar Square. The museum is really interesting to visit. Little garden at the back is the best. It’s extremely peaceful with plenty of places to sit and relax.
3. Visit Golden Temple
Golden Temple, actually a monastery, is famous for its golden color. The prayer wheels surround the courtyard and monkey statues. In Hindu, Hanuman (monkey) is considered as monkey god.
4. Step in Gallery Mcube
Gallery Mcube is a cute little local art gallery located near Patan Dhoka (the entryway to Patan). The gallery features local artists from Nepal. The unique traditional art is sold.
5. Step in Jawalakhel Handicraft Center
The Jawalakhel Handicraft Center is famous for its Tibetan rugs. The center is associated with the Tibetan Refugee Camp which is located just across the street. Women weaving the rugs by hand can be seen. There’s also a small community building with small handmade knick knacks. Yak wool shawls and lovely scarves can be bought. It’s a great place to buy souvenirs.
6. Visit Jawalakhel Central Zoo
The Central Zoo is a 6-hectare zoo in Jawalakhel, Nepal. It is home to some 870 animals of 109 species, and is operated by the National Trust for Nature Conservation. Although it was originally a private zoo, it was opened to the public in 1956. Over one million visitors come to enjoy the displays at the Central Zoo annually.
7. Uku Bahal
Uku Bahal is one of the most significant Buddhist monasteries in Nepal. It is located at the southern side of Patan Durbar Square. This majestic site is also known as Rudra Varna Mahavir and was constructed in the 590 to 604 A.D. by King Shivadev. The three courtyards located inside this monastery premises make it unique. The statues of two lions bearing flags are erected in the outer courtyard.
8. Visit Patan Royal Palace
The Royal Palace in Lalitpur which was built-in the 14th century is the pride of Nepal. Most of the Durbar Square is covered by this complex. While exploring the Palace, one can see the gates located in the four corners of this Palace are carved beautifully and depict the stories and myths of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, and others.
9. Mahaboudha Monastery/Temple
Mahaboudha Temple, built in Shikhara-style architecture, is one of the most beautiful temples in Lalitpur (Patan). It is located in the Southern part of Durbar Square. This monastery is dedicated to Lord Buddha, and the several terracotta statues of Gautam Buddha are its attraction.
10. Godavari Botanical Garden
Godavari Botanical Garden is the place loaded with trees and an outstanding assortment of vegetation. The place is laden with peaceful environment. The place is ideal for picnics and strolls.
Among all the festivals, the Biska Jatra, Gai Jatra, Holi, Teej, Tongue Piercing and Sindoor festivals are the most colourful and energising. Bara, Samay Baji, Newari Set Meal, Choila, Spiciest Grilled Meat, Aalu Tama, Healthy Stew, Sekuwa, Yummiest Barbecue Meat, Kachilaa are Newar’s Unique food varieties to be tasted.
